It was October 6, and a horrific shipping accident was about to happen just off the coast of the Isle of Man. Sir William Hillary, who was resident at the time, lived in a house with a full view of Douglas Harbour.
When he heard of the troubles, Sir William, like so many others, headed down to the shore to watch in horror as a Royal navy cutter seeking shelter in Douglas Bay got into trouble.

The Vigilant had been at sea when a strong off-shore wind meant she needed to get to safety quickly. The vigilant had a damaged rudder and stern and was helpless as the lashing waves continued to threaten the lives of those onboard.
All the people on Douglas harbour could do was to watch as the Vigilant was bashed about just meters from shore.
Distressed at the tragedy unfolding in front of him, Sir William offered up a reward to any man who would help him row out to the Vigilant and tow her back to safety.
